Parents Please Read This Letter November 6, 1983

Dear Sir,

Our son Jeremy was 23 months old when he had his first asthma attack on April 6, 1983. We carried him to the Pediatrician and he was given shots to help him breathe. Little did we know that it was the first attack out of approximately 21 attacks during the next 16 weeks.

Each visit, Jeremy received between two to five shots and was put on liquid Alupent and Theo-Dur Sprinkles to try to prevent an asthma attack. Every other week, they would draw 10 cc’s of blood from him to check his level of medicine because they kept increasing it to no avail. His increasing dosage of Alupent made his heart beat so fast that they had to take him off it. At this point, he was put on a Pulmo-Air machine with inhalant Alupent and sent to an Allergist. On our first visit to the Allergist, he had to be put on steroids daily to get him better before they could do skin testing on him. They tried to increase his dosage of Theo-Dur Sprinkles again, and he would throw up until the dosage wore off, which is approximately eight hours.

It took him two weeks to be stable enough to do the skin testing. They did 48 scratch tests on his back and 13 injections in his arm. He reacted to dust, dust mites, cats, and fescue grass pollen. We took steps to eliminate these problems.

We do not have a cat, but the babysitter had a yard cat and she was given away. I dusted and vacuumed every day, covered all the air conditioner vents in the house with cheese cloth, changed the filters weekly, took everything out of his room and off his walls except his bed and chest of drawers. The Fescue grass pollen is only in the air from April to June, so that was already gone at that point.

After doing all this, he did not seem to be any better. I contacted the Allergist and told them I did not think that they had found what his main allergy was. The Allergist told me that children’s skin tests at this age were not accurate that we should wait until November or December and re-test him, and in the meantime we should keep him on Steroids, Theo-Dur Sprinkles, Ru-Tess antihistamine, and the Pulmo-Air machine.

At this point, I read an article about the side effect of Steroids. I found out that they can stunt your growth, cause cataracts on your eyes and damage your kidneys and liver. My husband and I were worried about this so we went to discuss our worries with the Allergist and were told we had no choice. If Jeremy did not remain on Steroids, he would not be able to breath and according to the Allergist, alternate day Steroids had no known side effects.

During this time, both Jeremy’s thumbnails became deformed and no one could explain why. He had gained five pounds of weight due to water retention.

We took each day at a time. Jeremy’s asthma attacks became such a routine occurrence that even our four year old son would know when Jeremy was in distress and needed to be put on the Pulmo-Air machine.

On September 3, 1983, I was looking through the Saturday paper and noticed an advertisement for your service. Since our house is only five years old, we did not think we needed your services, but we decided to try it anyway.

Mr. Lawrence Foster came out to our house and explained exactly what your service does. He assured us that it would help our son. We were skeptical at this point. When Mr. Foster returned to his office, his partner called us with his sincere concern for Jeremy and assured us also that it would help his condition. I called the Allergist and asked their opinion. They told me that it was not necessary as long as we kept the filters clean.

We decided to have the decontamination and cleaning service done. Your company came to our house on Friday afternoon September 9, 1983.

Since September 4th Jeremy had been on 50 mg. of Steroids daily and Pulmo-Air machine every 4 hours, along with his regular medicine and was still wheezing.

The work-men were most courteous and efficient. The morning after the cleaning service, Jeremy had stopped wheezing for the first time in 7 days. We started decreasing his steroid dosage and discontinued his treatments on the Pulmo-Air machine. By Sunday, his coughing and runny nose had stopped. On Wednesday we had completely stopped his Steroids.

Needless to say, your cleaning and decontamination service was a God-Send to Jeremy and our whole family. Jeremy has not had an allergy related asthma attack since.

We wish to thank all of you for changing our lives and giving us back a happy and well little boy.
